Serengeti National Park

Overview

Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest and most iconic national park, as well as a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated globally as one of the best safari destinations in Africa. Renowned for its vast, uninterrupted landscapes and extraordinary wildlife, the Serengeti offers year-round game viewing and unforgettable safari experiences in the heart of East Africa.

The name “Serengeti” is derived from the Maasai word siringet, meaning “the place where the land runs on forever,” a fitting description for its endless plains that stretch across approximately 14,750 square kilometers. The park features a diverse range of habitats, including expansive grassland plains, savanna, riverine forests, and woodlands, all supporting a rich ecosystem teeming with wildlife.

Located in northwestern Tanzania, Serengeti National Park forms part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem, which includes the neighboring Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. It is also bordered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the southeast, Maswa Game Reserve to the southwest, Grumeti Game Reserve and Ikorongo Game Reserve to the west, and the Loliondo Game Control Area to the northeast. Together, these protected areas create one of the most important and expansive wildlife ecosystems in the world.

Serengeti National Park is world-famous for hosting the spectacular Great Migration, one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras, elands, and Thomson’s gazelles, migrate in a continuous cycle between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing land and water. This dramatic journey, marked by river crossings and predator encounters, offers unmatched wildlife viewing and photography opportunities.

In addition to the Great Migration, the Serengeti is home to the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros) as well as cheetahs, giraffes, hyenas, and a vast array of bird species. Its high concentration of predators makes it one of the best places in Africa to witness raw wildlife interactions in their natural habitat.

With its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, luxury safari lodges, tented camps, and guided game drives, Serengeti National Park remains a top destination for luxury safaris, wildlife photography, and adventure travel in Africa.
