Watamu Marine Nationa Park

Overview

Watamu Marine National Park & Reserve was established in 1968, being one of the marine parks in Kenya and named internationally as a UNESCO Biosphere covering an area of 229 kilometers of pristine white sandy beaches. The park boasts diverse marine; life, birdlife, fish, turtles, and dugongs.

The park’s coral reefs form the physical and biological backbone of the area. With over 150 species of hard and soft corals, such as brain corals, fan corals, and sponges, it provides abundant nutrients for fish with over 500 species of fish and the reserve over 1000.

There are also whale sharks, manta rays, octopuses, and barracuda as some of the larger species in the park. Visitors can enjoy the white sandy beaches, snorkeling, water skiing, windsurfing, and glass-bottomed boat tours. Other features include Gede ruins, Green turtles, and unique coral gardens.
